Birth Doula Amsterdam – Continuous Support with Ayu Doula Amsterdam

Birth is not only a medical event. It is a life transition. As a Doula in Amsterdam, I offer continuous emotional, physical, and informational support so you feel safe, heard, and deeply supported throughout pregnancy, labor, and the early postpartum period.

At Ayu Doula Amsterdam, my role is simple and powerful: I stay. I listen. I support.

WHAT IS A DOULA?

Unlike medical staff who rotate shifts, a birth doula remains present throughout your labor — offering steady reassurance, comfort techniques, and emotional grounding. A birth doula does not replace your midwife or obstetrician. She complements them

A postpartum doula is often hired to continue the support offered by the maternity nurse or kraamzoorg, without medical focus, supporting the new families in finding their rhythm, often preparing nourishing meals, offering support for breastfeeding and around the house.

Doulas may have different skills and specialties based on their education and courses.

HISTORY OF DOULAS - AN ANCIENT ROLE RECLAIMED

For most of human history, women gave birth surrounded by other women. Birth was supported by community — mothers, sisters, experienced companions who stayed close.

When birth moved into hospitals in the 20th century, safety improved — but continuous emotional support often disappeared.

The modern doula profession emerged to restore what was missing: steady presence.

Today, in Amsterdam’s well-established maternity system, doulas work alongside midwives and hospital teams — ensuring you feel both medically safe and emotionally supported.
